I commend Tufts University for its decision to remove the Sackler name and for its thorough internal review to ensure that the institution is free from conflicts of interest moving forward.

For millions of families that have been affected by the opioid crisis fueled by the Sackler’s greed, it was a slap in the face to see the Sackler name displayed publicly as if they were responsible philanthropic actors. Their motivation was not altruism, but rather part of a coordinated marketing scheme to counteract concerns about the addictive potential of OxyContin.

I call on all other responsible institutions to remove the Sackler name and protect themselves from corrupting influences that will undermine the integrity of their organizations.
