LEXINGTON, MA - Today, Assistant Speaker Clark (MA-5) announced her district’s winner of the annual Congressional Art Competition. This year’s theme for the competition was ‘resilience’.

Shui Hu, a high school senior from Lexington High School, was chosen as the 2021 winner for Massachusetts’ Fifth District. Hu’s piece, entitled, “The Vaccine is Coming!” depicts her family’s expressions when they learned that the COVID-19 vaccine was made available. Ellen Chiang of Winchester High School placed 2nd for her painting, “Eye of the Hurricane”, and Amy Feng of Lexington High School placed 3rd for her work,  “Desk of Cards.”

“Every year, I am so impressed by the talent and creativity of our district’s high school students. This year’s winning piece captures the strength of the American people and the importance of family after such an unprecedented year. It’s a powerful moment of hope and relief that we can all relate to,” said Assistant Speaker Clark. “The painting will undoubtedly resonate with the Members, staff, and visitors who come to the U.S. Capitol and I can’t wait to see it hanging in Washington.”

Hu will be honored in the district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington D.C. Her art will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol in the Cannon Tunnel, alongside winners from other Congressional districts. The 2nd and 3rd place winners’ artworks will be displayed at the district offices for the next year. Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each Congressional district. Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.
