Today, the House voted to put power back in the hands of the American people. HR1, the For the People Act, stops the cycle of corruption that has come to define Washington politics. HR1 will make it easier to vote and harder to buy elections. I’m proud that HR1 includes my bill requiring presidential candidates to disclose their tax returns and divest from financial conflicts of interest before taking office. The American people shouldn’t question whether the occupant of the White House is working for them, or to line their own pockets. HR1 reinfuses our democracy with accountability and transparency. This is what the American people want from their government, and today we took the first step to deliver on that promise.
