MALDEN, MA — Today, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (MA-5) joined in Democrats’ nationwide Save Social Security Day of Action — gathering local leaders at the Malden Social Security Office to expose Republicans’ plot to dismantle Social Security and underscore the devastating impacts it will have on seniors across Massachusetts.

“Without Social Security, 1 out of 3 Americans would end their lives in poverty. That’s what Social Security means, and yet the Republican Party wants to sell it for parts. Why? To reward a handful of ultra-rich donors who keep them in office,” said Whip Clark. “Today, across the country, Americans are coming together with one very clear message: Hands Off Social Security. The American people are showing the billionaire class that we are not powerless. We are fighting back — Democrats, seniors, Massachusetts — and we are going to win together.”

“The attacks on Social Security from the Trump Administration and Elon Musk’s DOGE have reached a crisis point. What started as a campaign of misinformation to undermine faith in the program has grown into a reckless operation aimed at destabilizing the Social Security Administration. And why are they doing this? To create an artificial crisis that justifies cuts and privatization schemes,” said Max Richtman, President and CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.

“With every paycheck, the American people paid for their earned Social Security benefits, as well as the access to their benefits through high quality service and community-based offices,” said Rich Couture, President of AFGE Council 215. “Yet the Administration is paying thousands of SSA employees to leave and threatening thousands more with layoffs, all while planning to close field offices starting next year. If you can’t get service to access your benefits, that is a benefit cut, plain and simple. Social Security employees and the American people deserve better.”

70 million Americans rely on Social Security, including seniors and Americans with disabilities. Since January, Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans have gutted the Social Security Administration — closing regional offices, firing staff, and delaying benefits — all to hand a $7 trillion tax break to billionaires like Elon Musk.

Today’s press conference also included remarks from Karen Lynch, Membership Chair of the Massachusetts Senior Action Council; State Senator Jason Lewis; and State Representative Paul Donato.
