WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Assistant Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Katherine Clark (MA-5) released the following statement in response to Majority Leader Steny Hoyer’s announcement that he will step down from House Leadership.

“There are no better words to describe Leader Hoyer than a true public servant. He has been instrumental to the success of the House Democratic Caucus as a leader, mentor, and master legislator.

“Effective, thoughtful, and driven by his devotion to our country, Leader Hoyer has fought to make the House a better and more inclusive place. He has counseled and championed decades of members of Congress, helping them to deliver for the American people and, in turn, improving millions of lives. As a legislative expert and coalition builder, he paved the way for some of our most groundbreaking policies, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

“Leader Hoyer has steadfastly advocated for American workers, leading the call to ‘Make it in America’ by revitalizing our manufacturing industry. His leadership has made the American economy and people stronger and more secure. He has been a staunch defender of democracy here and around the world and a true champion of civil rights.

“It has been an honor to serve in leadership alongside Leader Hoyer and learn from him.”
