WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democratic Whip Katherine Clark issued the following statement after Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi announced she will not run for re-election:

“Nancy Pelosi is an American icon.

“I am immeasurably grateful for her leadership, mentorship, values, and deep patriotism. Speaker Pelosi is the rare public servant whose impact and achievements are so far-reaching that they have defined entire chapters of our American story. She has held up the ideals of liberty, justice, and equality for all and moved us forward as a nation in a profound way. 

“Through the violence of an insurrection and the chaos of a pandemic, amid battles over our health and our climate, her focus has never wavered from a singular duty: building a future worthy of our children. Through nearly 40 years of skilled and relentlessly effective legislating, she has done more to advance that effort than any Speaker in the history of this institution.

“It is a distinct personal honor to have served alongside her, and I wish Speaker Pelosi and her family all the best in this next chapter.”
