Clark Statement on President Obama’s State of the Union Address

Washington D.C. – Congresswoman Katherine Clark released the following statement regarding President Obama’s State of the Union Address:

“I agree with President Obama - the state of the Union is strong and part of that strength is derived from our diversity. If we remember that we are one American family – descendants of immigrants from every region of the world with different religions and ideologies – our country succeeds.

“The families who make America great – families from every Congressional district in this country -- sent us to Congress to work for them, not well funded special interests or the ultra-rich. To do that we have to stand up to the gun lobby and advance commonsense legislation to reduce gun violence. We have to stop gifting tax breaks to Big Oil and billionaires, and do more to help hungry children and seniors. Congress needs to bridge the partisan divide and immediately address the deadly opioid epidemic that grips our nation.

“Putting families first also means that non-stop assaults on the Affordable Care Act and Planned Parenthood must end. Instead of limiting health and success to only those who can afford them; we should focus on policies that allow more to succeed in our economy. The solutions are in front of us: high quality, affordable child care, equal pay for equal work, guaranteed family leave, clean air and water, debt-free college, and investments in education and our workforce that create an economy that works for everyone.”
