WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Assistant Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Katherine Clark (MA-5) released the following statement in response to Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement that she will step down from House Leadership.

“Speaker Nancy Pelosi is an icon who has guided our nation to become a more perfect union – moving us toward ‘the glorious horizon our founders once promised.’ She has led with purpose, strength, and patriotism, and her dedication to our country and Constitution is unsurpassed.

“Speaker Pelosi expanded health care as a right, not a privilege, with the passage of the Affordable Care Act. She has been steadfast in her commitment to equality for all and is a champion for the LGBTQ+ community. Her leadership is global; she has been a voice for democracy, diplomacy, and peace around the world, standing up to tyrants, speaking out for the voiceless, and defending the planet. Above all else, she has fought for the children. Speaker Pelosi always reminds us that our greatest responsibility is building a better tomorrow for the next generation.

“As the first woman Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, she demonstrated to the world that women could be leaders at the highest levels. Speaker Pelosi has proven that when women are at the table, the work of Congress is more effective and responsive to the American people.

“I, like so many in Congress, am lucky to call Speaker Pelosi a friend and mentor. Her legacy will continue to guide us, and her achievements will continue to inspire women and girls around the world. I am profoundly grateful for her unparalleled service to progress and our country.”
