Thousands of people gathered in Lexington Battle Green to witness the reenactment of the first battle of the American Revolution.

This is a part of the statewide celebration of the 250th anniversary of the American - British war in 1775.

Leaders of the Commonwealth were on sight for the reenactment, including Governor. Maura Healey who drew out similarities in sentiments felt hundreds of years ago to modern day atmosphere.

“What these people rose up and fought for and defied a king and a mighty army for was freedom. Freedom, possibility, opportunity for every one of every station in life,” she addressed the crowd.

Congresswoman Katherine Clark, also in attendance, added that the fight for democracy has yet to be finished.

“American democracy was born in their trembling hands 250 years ago, and it lives in ours today,” she continued. “So let us be worth of this inheritance.”

Meanwhile, a small anti-Trump rally took place outside of the reenactment in Lexington. One protester told WBZ NewsRadio that she is glad President Trump did not attend the celebrations.

“There's been new terror every other day," Colleen, a protestor at the rally, said. "It’s just been a horror show. I think he is a little scared probably coming to a nice blue state like Massachusetts, and I’m glad he didn’t come and ruin the ceremony."

The town scheduled events all weekend long in honor of the anniversary.
