Residents of Massachusetts can now file their taxes online for free directly with the IRS.

Massachusetts is one of 12 states where taxpayers can use a new system, called Direct File, to file their federal income taxes electronically free of charge. In its pilot form, the newly available tool can help people with “simple” tax returns, such as those with just W-2s and who claim a standard deduction.

“This is the start of American taxpayers having a truly free and easy option to file their taxes directly with the IRS, saving people time and money,” U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Cambridge) said. “For years, giant tax prep companies like TurboTax and H&R Block have gamed the system to make millions by taking a bite out of refunds and monetizing personal information. The IRS Direct File is an example of how the Biden administration is cutting junk fees and making government work better for working people.”

Warren said about a third of taxpayers in Massachusetts will be able to use the Direct File tool this tax season.

U.S. Representative Katherine Clark (D-Revere) called the program a “free, public version of TurboTax.”

The program is available in English and Spanish, and taxpayers can file from their smartphone, laptop, or desktop computer. The U.S. Department of the Treasury said Direct File was made possible by funds appropriated by the federal Inflation Reduction Act.
