U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton tweeted a photograph late Wednesday of the front door of the United States House of Representatives, “the People’s House,” in the wake of the violent, pro-Trump insurrection that rocked Washington, D.C. and the nation to its core.
...The Salem Democrat was one of a slew of elected officials in the commonwealth and beyond who took to social media in the midst of the riot to speak out against the violence, which forced numerous legislators to evacuate the Capitol chambers and shelter in place. Moulton and others from the Bay State’s congressional delegation were among them.
...U.S. Rep. Katherine Clark, assistant speaker of the House, described Wednesday’s “dark moment” as a “culmination of everything Trump has been promoting.”
“Praying for an end of the violence and safety for everyone, and the preservation of our democracy,” the Massachusetts Democrat tweeted. “This must stop.”
Law enforcement in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia and New Jersey as well as National Guard personnel all were sent to respond to the riot, which ended in the deaths of four individuals, the discovery of two explosives and the delay of President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral win certification.
As of 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, more than 52 arrests had been made in connection with the storm of the Capitol, four for carrying pistols without licenses, one for prohibited weapons violations and 47 for defying the curfew and unlawful entry, according to Metropolitan Police Chief Robert J. Contee III.
Two pipe bombs were recovered, one at the Democratic National Committee headquarters and another at the Republican National Committee’s. A long gun and molotov cocktails were also discovered in a cooler on a vehicle at the scene, according to Contee.
“This also was on the ground of the United States Capitol,” he said.
