I won't sugarcoat it: The Big, Ugly Law is the cruelest, most damaging piece of legislation I've ever read during my 12 years in Congress. All together, it reduces the 70 million poorest Americans' income by nearly 3% — while handing $117 billion in tax breaks to the richest 1%.

The Big, Ugly Law will have real impacts on working families' ability to access health care and keep food on the table. I'm fighting to minimize the damage here in Massachusetts. But I want you to have the facts:

  • More than 320,000 people across Massachusetts will lose their health insurance. That’s 1 out of every 22 Bay Staters.

  • A family of four earning $64,000 a year will see their annual health care premiums increase by $2,571.

  • At least 150,000 Massachusetts residents will lose federal food assistance.

  • Across America, the average family will see their energy bills increase by up to $400.

  • A tax on taxes — the IRS is eliminating the free Direct File program, meaning taxpayers will have to pay money just to file their taxes.

  • Student loan forgiveness can be taxed as income in one huge lump sum, costing the average American worker nearly 20% of their pay — for the entire year.

  • A typical student loan borrower making $80,000 per year will be forced to pay an additional $2,929 per year in student loan payments.

  • Massachusetts will lose 11,000 manufacturing and energy jobs.

And all of this pain serves only one purpose: To take money out of your pocket and give it to the billionaire class. This is not what the American people voted for. This is not what they expect from their representatives. And it will not stand.

I need your help fighting back. The best tool I can have is a concrete example of what these actions mean for the people I represent. If you or someone you know is going to feel the consequences of this legislation/Republican betrayal, you can share your story here.

If we keep speaking out, fighting back, and standing together, we can send this Big, Ugly Law where it belongs: straight into the dustbin of history.
