House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark called on Kamala Harris to make childcare more affordable for families, a topic that the Massachusetts Democrat has pushed for as she has ascended party leadership. Democrats have called to lower the cost of childcare and to increase and extend the childcare tax credit to more families. Such proposals were part of the Build Back Better proposal, which didn’t pass. In Congress, she has worked to get more grant money for childcare programs, such as Head Start.
“Let’s put childcare at the top of the agenda,” the mother of three said, recalling the high cost she paid as a working mom. Should Democrats win a net four seats to win the House majority, Clark would likely ascend to majority leader in the House, under a possible Speaker Hakeem Jeffries.
