WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (MA-5) released the following statement after the White House announced a federal rule expanding firearm background checks under Democrats’ Safer Communities Act:
“The deadly gun show loophole is finally closed. President Biden’s announcement today honors the will of the vast majority of the American people. This is about common sense: no gun, anywhere, should trade hands for profit without a background check.
“Thanks to the non-stop advocacy of survivors across the country, the leadership of the Biden-Harris Administration, and the persistence of Democrats in Congress, America has taken the greatest strides against gun violence that we’ve seen in three decades.
“Now, Congress needs to build on that progress by fully closing the boyfriend loophole, enacting a nationwide red flag law, getting high-capacity magazines off the street, and reenacting the federal assault weapons ban.”
