WASHINGTON, D.C. —  Today, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (MA-5) joined Democratic Women’s Caucus Chair Lois Frankel (FL-22), Pro-Choice Caucus Co-Chairs Barbara Lee (CA-12) and Diana DeGette (CO-1), and Reps. Judy Chu (CA-28), Joyce Beatty (OH-3), and Shontel Brown (OH-11) to highlight Democrats’ continued fight for reproductive freedom alongside the patients, providers, and advocates they invited to attend President Biden’s 2024 State of the Union Address. Whip Clark’s State of the Union guest, Amanda Zurawski, shared her story of nearly dying after being denied an abortion in her home state of Texas. Below is a transcript of her remarks:

“I am honored to stand here with these champions of reproductive freedom, including the relentless leaders of the Pro-Choice Caucus and the Democratic Women’s Caucus.

“Today, my colleagues and I are joined by Americans who know firsthand the cruelty of MAGA extremism. These women who are joining us today for the State of the Union are patriots and they have traveled to our nation’s Capital to say loud and clear that there is something deeply wrong in a GOP America that would promote two classes of citizenship and health care in this country.

“The last 20 months have brought fear, danger, and indignity that American women have not known for half a century. Doctors are being threatened with prison. Patients are being forced to the brink of death before they get the care they need. Hopeful moms are now being denied the chance to start a family through IVF.

“This is the MAGA Republicans vision come to life. This is the nightmare — and they still aren’t finished.

“Republicans have been perfectly clear that their objective is a nationwide abortion ban. Every state. Every zip code. Every hospital and every doctor’s office. This is a campaign for control — complete control — over if and when and how we have children. Let's just look at their record.

“184 – 184 – House Republicans have sponsored a bill that would take the Alabama ruling on fertility treatment nationwide. 195 of House Republicans voted against legal contraception. Let that sink in. They voted unanimously against restoring Roe v. Wade. And now, they’re blocking our bill codifying the right to use IVF.

“For women like my friend Amanda Zurawski, who I am so proud to stand with today, this isn’t just a cruel political game. It’s a matter of life and death for her.

“The ability to have a family hangs in the balance. The freedom to live with health, safety, and self-determination are at stake. Amanda has been at the forefront of this fight for over a year, refusing to let politicians hide from the consequences of their extremism.

“It’s an honor to have her as my guest today.

“Please join me in welcoming this unparalleled advocate, a USA Today Woman of the Year, Amanda Zurawski.”
