BELMONT, MA Today, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (MA-5) joined advocates to celebrate the opening of the Belmont Farmers’ Market and discuss efforts to combat food insecurity across the Commonwealth.

“Access to fresh, healthy food is a right, not a privilege. Yet, hunger is still commonplace for half a million Bay Staters — including 120,000 children,” said Whip Clark. “I’m grateful to the Belmont Food Collaborative for helping lead our fight against food insecurity, and I was thrilled to join them in opening the Belmont Farmers’ Market – a pillar of this community that is strengthening our small business ecosystem, building up local farms, and moving us closer to the hunger-free future that our kids, families, veterans, and seniors deserve.”

The Belmont Farmers Market is a project of the Belmont Food Collaborative, a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote good health, sustainable farming, and expanded access to fresh, local food. The organization has had a transformative impact on the lives of MA-5 families — placing $48,000 back into their food budgets in the last year alone.

Whip Clark is proud to be on the frontlines of the fight to end chronic hunger and food insecurity. She helped lead the passage of the Families First Coronavirus Relief Act, the American Rescue Plan, the Keep Kids Fed Act, and the Food Donation Improvement Act — landmark laws that have bolstered SNAP benefits, increased funding for WIC, provided free school meals, enabled kids to access quality lunches over the summer break, increased the ability of businesses to donate unused food, and funded local food initiatives
