WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (MA-5) released the following statement on the removal of Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives:

“This is a solemn day in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Through his duplicitous misuse of power, profound disregard for the needs of the American people, and disloyalty to anyone but himself, Kevin McCarthy has proven unworthy of presiding over the House. 

“But the Republican civil war is bigger than one man. Right-wing MAGA extremism has enveloped the Republican Party and taken over the business of the People’s House. 

“Since the start of the 118th Congress, the Republican Majority has driven us to the edge of economic catastrophe — twice. They have stood on the side of violent insurrectionists. They have viciously attacked the American people's reproductive freedom, financial security, and fundamental dignity. They have launched a sham impeachment. They have shown that they do not respect the institution they serve and are willing to betray the democracy it upholds. 

“The American people face urgent challenges: an existential climate crisis, fascistic threats to our democracy, and an economy still recovering from the pandemic. More than ever, we need proven, patriotic, people-first leadership. 

“Hakeem Jeffries is the only person in command of this Chamber, and House Democrats will be proud to cast yet another vote to put him in the Speaker’s chair.”
