Washington, D.C. – Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (MA-5) released the following statement on the second anniversary of the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol:

“Two years ago, a violent mob – fueled by hate and a tyrannical president – stormed the Capitol and attacked our democracy. Today, we remember the lives lost, honor their grieving families, and reflect on the dangerous precipice our nation confronted.

“Tragically, the same extremist forces continue to have a stranglehold on House Republicans. They cannot elect a leader because their Conference is held hostage by Members who peddle misinformation and want to dismantle democracy. They voted against certifying the results of the 2020 election as well as honoring the courageous law enforcement officers who defended the Capitol on January 6th.

“Throughout our history, moments of adversity – whether Pearl Harbor or September 11 – have brought Congress and our country together. They remind us that we are not two parties but one nation and that the fight to preserve democracy is more sacred than our political differences. On this solemn day, I ask my colleagues across the aisle to remember why we are sent to Washington: to defend the Constitution and serve the American people.”
