Lawmakers from both parties have begun to call for President Donald Trump’s after a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol on Wednesday – with many arguing that, rather than impeachment, Vice President Mike Pence and the cabinet should remove him through the 25th Amendment.

...Assistant House Speaker Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) and Assistant Senate Democratic leader Patty Murray (D-Wash.) called for Trump’s removal on Wednesday, with Murray calling the 25th Amendment “the most immediate way to ensure the President is prevented from causing further harm.”

KEY BACKGROUND

The 25th Amendment, ratified in 1965 after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, allows for the president to be removed in the event of incapacitation. However, it’s a steep climb: it would require both Pence and a majority of cabinet members to vote to remove the president who appointed them. If Trump disputes his removal to Congress, both chambers would have to vote by two-thirds to remove him.
