WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (MA-5) issued the following statement on the passing of former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court:

“Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was a true public servant and trailblazing jurist.

“From the Arizona State Capitol to the highest court in the land, her decades-long career was a testament to a simple truth: there is no limit to the greatness that women can achieve. Guided by a deep commitment to equality, Justice O’Connor crafted landmark rulings that removed barriers to women’s advancement while defending reproductive freedom and safeguarding affirmative action. Even after leaving the bench, she forged an extraordinary legacy as a citizen activist — from championing civics education to fueling the fight for Alzheimer's research.

“Justice O’Connor has left an indelible mark on the fabric of America. As we collectively grieve her loss, let us resolve to continue her fight: shattering glass ceilings, protecting civil rights, and making space for all Americans at the decision-making table.”
