Gun Safety

Every day, more than 100 Americans are shot and killed — including six children. Our communities have been flooded with weapons that were designed for battlefields but are instead terrorizing our homes, schools, workplaces, and houses of worship.

Elected officials have a responsibility to tackle this uniquely American crisis. But instead of saving lives, MAGA Republicans continue to prioritize the gun lobby over our kids.

Congressman John Lewis and I helped organize a historic sit-in on the House Floor to make clear that we will not ignore the cries of devastated families or the pain of traumatized communities.

Since then, Democrats have taken important steps to get control of America’s gun epidemic.

With the Safer Communities Act, we enacted the most significant gun safety law in nearly 30 years. This landmark legislation is keeping guns out of dangerous hands by cracking down on straw purchases, bolstering red flag laws, and enhancing background checks for young buyers.

And to chart our path to a safer future, I secured federal funding to research the causes and impacts of gun violence — the first such investment in decades.

However, it is clear that we still have much more work to do. Inspired by the strength of survivors, students, and advocates across the country, I’m committed to getting assault weapons off our streets, requiring universal background checks for every gun purchase, fully closing the boyfriend loophole,” outlawing untraceable ghost guns,” and banning the sale of high-capacity magazines.
