WASHINGTON, D.C. — Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (MA-5) released the following statement on the passing of former Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson:

“Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson was a trailblazing public servant who redefined what’s possible for generations of Americans.

"As a nurse, state legislator, and a distinguished Member of Congress, she broke barriers — fighting injustice, standing up to institutional racism, and always lifting up others along the way.

"As the first woman and person of color to Chair the Science, Space, and Technology Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives, she was a leader in the passage of the CHIPS & Science Act, securing key investments in HBCUs, and advancing our nation’s commitment to science and progress.

“The halls of Congress and the country are better off because of Congresswoman Johnson’s powerful legacy. It was an honor to call her a colleague and friend, and I send my deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, and the entire Dallas community.”
