Gun Safety

No one should be unsafe in their home, schools, or places of worship, and laws ensuring that firearms are sold and used responsibly are an essential part of maintaining public safety. In January 2016, President Obama used his executive power to take important steps to curb gun violence, and I applaud him for these efforts. But the work to end the epidemic of gun violence in this country does not end there. Congress must act to close the remaining loopholes that allow domestic abusers, convicted criminals, and the dangerously mentally ill to buy guns and endanger our communities. There are a number of common sense measures that we can implement to address gun violence and keep our communities safe, which is why I have cosponsored legislation to strengthen background checks, fight gun trafficking, increase protections for victims of domestic violence, among other efforts.

Legislation to address gun violence has not been able to come up for a vote, let alone become law, in this Congress, and I have joined with my colleagues to call for action on this critical issue. It’s up to Congress to stand up to the heavy hand of America’s gun lobby and stand up for the innocent lives we lose daily to gun violence.

I look forward to hearing from you.
